Walking and Talking about Taxes: The Video

August 24, 2010

PROVIDENCE, RI – John Hope Settlement House, Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline, David W. Gatton of the United States Conference of Mayors, and a host of other special guests and residents gathered over breakfast on Monday, August 2, 2010 to celebrate results of the 9th Annual Providence Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign. The event was held at John Hope Settlement House, a nonprofit organization that works on behalf of children, youth and families in Providence and beyond.

Additional attendees at the Breakfast included representatives from United Way of RI, Washington Trust Bank, Citizens Bank, Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, Bank of America, local community leaders, and residents who benefited from this extraordinary work.  The program was also supported by Wal-Mart Foundation, and Intuit a software company that specializes in financial preparation programs.

The Results Breakfast provided guests with an opportunity to learn about the EITC program in Providence, a successful campaign that helped low and moderate income families access much needed funds from the nation’s largest and most important anti-poverty initiative. They also heard about the nine community sites in Providence that collaborate under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), and they heard about the Walkers and Talkers program.

Walkers and Talkers are made up of a cadre of residents who have experienced the success of EITC/VITA work.  They are connected to the neighborhoods, willing to share their experiences, and trained to educate, encourage and perhaps even accompany neighbors to the EITC/VITA sites.  Walkers and Talkers are selected and supported through the EITC/VITA program and Making Connections Providence.
