Uncovering Stories and Traditions; Confronting Community’s Pressing Issues
By Reza Corinne Clifton (Media and Communications Coordinator, John Hope Settlement House; Editor/Content Manager, John Hope Settlement Blog)
Starting in the year 2020, John Hope Settlement House will be due, by some accounts, to begin celebrating 100 years of existence and service. That is 100 years of visioning and implementing that was begun by African Americans – here in Providence, Rhode Island. It is 100 years of partnerships and perseverance and 100 years of individual and collective stories. How do we uncover the stories, and what is the power in knowing them? We don’t know until they are told, but we are here to dig them out and to document the next 100.
This space, the John Hope Settlement Blog, is one place we will do this. But we will also use this online home to address and confront the most pressing issues of the day, especially as viewed and analyzed by John Hope President/CEO, Peter D. Lee, MSW. First stop: Race Equity and the Achievement Gap.
